Seven ways to walk

Whether on two feet, in a wheelchair, up a mountain, in a park, down an alleyway, there are (at least) seven ways to walk! Follow this way…

1. Walk for health

Walking is just great for you, whether you make the famous (and not necessarily scientifically proven!) 10,000 steps a day, or 7,000 steps, or the best number of steps for you, or even use Nordic walking sticks for extra benefits.

2. Walk for mindfulness

Slowing down and walking to get into the present moment, non-judgementally, perhaps even with a little smile on your face, ahhhh, heavenly bliss. Be inspired by the wonderful Thich Nhat Hanh, of course. Thank you Thich! Your work, and walk, continues.

3. Walk at a specific time of day

Get up earlier and walk first thing, make the dawn your walking companion! Try out Libby DeLana’s completely gorgeous #ThisMorningWalk. Or how about night walking for some moonlit wandering?

4. Walk long and far

Connect with your religious, spiritual or otherwise roots and walk long and far for all kinds of reasons. There’s the Camino in Spain but other ancient pilgrimages are available, check them out.

5. Walk with wonder

Street Wisdom is a creative practice you use everyday as you walk. When you walk with wonder, you are more open to finding #BetterWays of living, loving, learning, laughing and more words beginning with L. Get curious, get outside, get answers!

6. Walk in nature

From rambling across the countryside to stumbling down mountains, there’s increasing evidence for all the benefits of walking in nature. Check out forest bathing – Shinrin-Yoku – and our friends at ParkBathe.

7. Walk for joy

Walk simply for the joy of walking. The movement, the feeling, the smiles, the light, the people, the health, the happiness, the noises, the signs, the conversation with a friend that means the world, the pace, the place, the space, the time you’ve taken out just for you. Ahhh, walking is wanderful!
